For a lot of years I was living in only one city. In fact, it was the same city in which I was born, where I made first friends, went to primary school, in which I met my first sweethearth etc.. This small city in which I grew up was for me the whole word. At that time I probably couldn’t imagine any other town. Honestly speaking, I didn’t even think that they exist. Certainly, I was seeing them in television etc.. Unluckily, they were so unrealistic that they were extremely abstract, therefore didn’t even seem to me like to be actual places.
I hadn’t been on for holiday thus hadn’t been to any place different than my small city. I am aware that it can sound a bit crazy but It was almost 25 years ago, so I believe that it was rather typical situation those days in our country. Especially for children like me – kids born not in a big city, and in rather poor family. After many years of staying in the same place, I eventually had a chance to see a word.
And you may not believe me, but once I started, I just couldn’t stop. I have been travelling for last twenty years. I have visited each the continents and almost 33 countries in total. Some of these places I visited only as a typical tourist, but in some of them I was actually living for a moment. Apparently, it has a lot of advantages. I could meet many new individuals, know different cultures, become familiar with many different cities and their history etc.. Most of my friends keep on repeating how jealous they are about my life. But occassionally I have this thought that very often they don’t remember that moving to new cities has also many disadvantages.
Nowadays, it is not so bad. When you move to new place, you could easily find very detailed information about almost anything you look for, for example, where to hire a motorbike in padova or where to print in nyc. But only imagine to find this sort of things a while ago, when internet was not so popular yet. I can recall that sometime this was even not easy for me to find out where I could get cheap but decent dinner. I do believe, that the hardest part of living in new places is to get familiar with new place, space and so forth. However, I do like it the most at the same time.
